Statement of Purpose - Purdue University

The rise in population along with the increase in the frequency of natural calamities has created an immediate demand for quality construction practices that offer proper residential areas which also act as safe-houses during natural disasters. Such practices can help reduce the problem of finding proper housing for the masses while also dealing with the important task of reducing the damages caused by natural calamities. The reason that the field of >Building Construction and Management plays a vital role in the proper management of human resources led me to pursue the specific program for my graduate studies. My fascination with this field started much before my undergraduate program. This interest grew in time and it helped me in pursuing Civil Engineering for my Bachelor’s at National Institute of Technology (NIT). Subsequently, I was exposed to the nuances of this field during my undergraduate studies. Certain courses like “Construction Planning and Management” and “Estimation and Civil Engineering Drawing” furthered my interest in this domain. During my second year of study, I opted for Building Materials and Construction Technology in my curriculum. This opened my eyes to the latest in construction technology and management methods. The Surveying course which I pursued exposed to the real work environment of a construction engineer. Then I underwent an internship at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on ‘Numerical Techniques and Quantum Geographical Information System (QGIS)’. In my fifth semester, the “Construction, Planning and Management” subject unveiled the plethora of applications of Operations Research in Project Management to me. I also learnt to estimate the material quantities and several other skills through the course “Estimation and Civil Engineering Drawing”. As part of my second internship, I worked on the research project <‘Modal Analysis and Damage detection of Multi degree of Freedom System’ which focused on damage detection of a structural system. Moreover, I was exposed to the nuances of corporate framework during my internship at M.N Dastur& Co (P) Ltd where I had worked on designing and modeling of a three storied RCC framed industrial building. The desire to conduct more advanced research drove me to pursue my current project on “Bacteria Based Concrete” at Construction Engineering Department of Jadavpur University. I hope all these research experiences will pave the way for my future in academics and research. I believe that my learning journey so far has primed my basic skills and attributes to fulfill my passion of pursuing graduate studies in the area of Building Construction and Management. The globally recognized graduate program at Purdue University – West Lafayette is sure to empower me with all-round knowledge to achieve greater success in my future endeavors. I am looking forward to enhancing my knowledge in specific areas such as Construction Safety and Concrete Construction. I would like to be associated with Prof. James L. Jenkins and Prof. Zarjon Baha, thanks to their unmatched contribution in Building Construction Management. I look forward to being one among the scholastic and research community of your Masters Program with full financial aid.
