Statement of Purpose Sample - Germany
As a student, I was always inclined towards science. When I learnt about Newton, the way I perceived science changed and started realizing how nature speaks with us. My physics teacher noticed my interest and she chose me as student representative for National Science Congress 2008 where I met with many other talented brains from different schools. This experience boosted my interests and I chose the science stream for my pre-university subjects to explore the subjects of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. During these 2 years, my reverence and curiosity for physics increased which made me opt for mechanical engineering for my undergrad studies. During the course, my favorite subjects were Design of Machine Members, Mechanics of Solids, Theory of Machines and my favorite lab courses were Production Technology Machine Tools. I stood 3rd in my 3rd semester and overall I am in the top 10 for the entire course. For my final year project I worked on ‘Testing of CI engine with coconut-oil blended Diesel as fuel’. The objective of this project was to prepare a fuel blended with coconut oil with different concentrations. We were a team of 4 and chose this topic taking into account the serious need for synthesis of alternate fuels. Indian terrain is suitable for the growth of coconut trees from where oil is extracted and is blended with diesel. This blended fuel was introduced into CI engine and the performance characteristics of the engine are studied under loads. We successfully completed this project in a span of 2 months.
During the course, I was a part of the Society of Automobile Engineers for three years wherein I participated in their design competitions. I have been a part of the design team of BAJA an All Terrain Vehicle Design and Fabrication competition conducted by SAE India. In the following year I was the captain for my eBAJA college team of 25 members where my skills of virtually designing a vehicle to practically fabricating and driving it got sharpened. In my third year, I took part in the internationally renowned Mechanical event BAJA where I helped my team in claculation and design considerations of the brakes subsystem of ATV. Under my captainship the e BAJA team of my college bagged 11th position in virtual design competition segment all over India. We have designed an electric powered passenger vehicle with All Terrain capability. Apart from leading the team I have soilded my hands by being the primary welder of the chassis and I headed suspension subsystem. This has helped me to gain practical exposure. This event gave me an opportunity to meet veterans of Indian Automobile field like K C Vohra and so it has been a very inspiring experience for me. Besides that I have also published two international papers on 'Auxetic Materials' and 'Multi Extrusion Process'.
After completion of my undergraduate studies, I joined NEXTracker as a graduate engineer trainee through campus placements. It is a flex company, which is prominent in single axis solar trackers. After probation, I was absorbed by New Product Introduction Department in India and promoted to Mechanical Design Engineer, where I was a part of the team which designed mechanical components of tracker. As the part of self-development, I cracked Solidworks Associate examination conducted by Dassault Systems. I was fortunate to be a part of the brain storming sessions where I had the opportunity to closely observe the decision-making process of my extremely brilliant seniors with great experience in the solar industry.
Besides this, after leaving college along with my professional career I was Team Facilitator for SAE Efficycle event where I have guided my sub-juniors in designing a efficycle. I was also a part of the National Service Scheme of my college and helped for the village adaption camp where we swept the roads, painted the govt school. I also taught biology and physics for tenth class students in an orphanage. All these experiences have given me significant leadership skills and helped me improve in terms of collaborative efforts and team work. The giants in the automobile industry Audi, BMW, Mercedes are all very particular about making the mobility more autonomous which reduces human effort. Autonymy not only eases drivers work but also in coming years it can save the lives by applying automatic brakes when it senses danger. Also the next big idea is transformation towards sustainable propulsion systems. All these leaders are aleady ready with their basic models of electric vehicles. Tesla, one of the pioneers of E Cars has been an inspiration and has bought significant light to this matter. The subjects and curriculum at University Name will help me garnish my basic knowledge with in depth knowledge related to these technologies.
I have also been fascinated with products and design since I was a kid. I always thought about how the thing could be designed in a better way. I was also in particular interested about cars. I used to design them on paper and with clay. What seemed amateur at that time laid the foundation to my interests. Today, working in the design wing of my employer I have learnt how to perfectly blend a design which meets the industrial requirement while simultaneously considering the economics of design, ease of manufacturing and field application areas. Having gained more than two years experience I wish to enhance my technical knowledge in the field of automotive design. I gained knowledge on e-mobility when I had designed and fabricated an electrical passenger for eBAJA along with my team. This project had tested my technical knowledge in the field of all terrain passenger vehicle design and also my managerial skills as it is very challenging task to lead a team of 25 members for 9 months and reach the goal of producing a end product when still pursuing bachelors degree. I further want to expand my knowledge by getting into research of 'vehicle design conceptualization' and 'development of feasible e-mobility'. In the future, I see myself in the R&D department as an engineer with sound knowledge of the technical aspects in a leading manufacturer of sustainable automobiles.
Achieving this career goal is going to take a lot of knowledge, a very strong skill-set, some clever networking, and the knack of seizing the right opportunities. I see (University Name) as a means to gaining all of these. The curriculum at (University Name) aligns well with my career interests. I look forward to working with Prof. (Talk about a professor whose work you admire). Besides the curriculum, I look forward to interacting with a global cohort of classmates. There is a lot to learn from them. A PhD. at (University Name) will allow me to forage friendships and build networks that will prove useful both professionally and personally. Further, (University Name) offers me the opportunity to connect with recruiters and managers from global firms. I wish to make full use of this opportunity as this will be a first step to kick start my global career.
To conclude, I’d like to leverage my experience and learning at (University Name) to grow into the professional that I dream of being.
