Biden wins US Elections: What does it mean for you?
The United States of America has always been a favored MS Destination for aspirants. However, due to many reasons, the number of Indian students going to the US in search of better opportunities had started to dwindle over the years. Will this election change that? Will the election of Joe Biden as a new president be a new dawn for MS Aspirants? Let’s find out:
Biden’s new America: Laws and policies
Immigration Laws
Donald Trump’s immigration laws have very few right-wing supporters. His policies have always been harsh towards immigrants who come to the US in search of more opportunities. His nationalist campaign made it difficult for Indian students and professionals to get jobs and more opportunities.
Joe Biden was a vice-president when President Obama presided over the white house. Biden has a more liberal stance towards immigration policies and it is his belief that immigrants make America the great country it is. According to the US Department of Commerce reports, there are over one million international students in the US, who contributed over $44 billion to the American economy in 2018 through fees and living expenses.
Education Policies
Donald Trump has not been the best friend for international students during his tenure. When the pandemic hit, he sent the entire International students community into a state of utter confusion. He announced that students who were taking online-only courses would have their VISAs canceled. This was however overturned by the court of law.
According to Biden, International students who come to the US for higher education are well-positioned to contribute and improve the world economy. Here is an excerpt from his official website that shows his support for International students:
VISA Rules
Donald Trump’s VISA rules were very strict and rigid. H1B denial rates have sky-rocketed during Trump’s regime and he is committed to making it even harder for International workers. He recently rolled out new restrictions on H1B VISA announced by DHS (Department of Homeland Security) last October.
Biden has always been a steadfast protestor of Trump’s VISA policies. Currently, employment VISAs are capped at 140000 each year. Biden aims to increase the cap by allowing more work VISAs. His manifesto states that he will reform the temporary VISA System & eliminate the limits on employment-based visas by country, which create unacceptably long backlogs.
Overwhelming support from the International Students
According to a recent survey conducted by the Erudera College News, with 430 participants of different nationalities, as many as 71.1% of the international students support Biden. He is a well-known left-liberal who has publicly promised to revert back all atrocious immigration and VISA laws rolled out by Trump. Trump has been infamous among the International Students Committee.
According to data by the Department of State in 2015, 644,233 student visas (F-1) were granted to international students, which number dropped in the following years as listed below:
- 2016 – 471,728
- 2017 – 393,573
- 2018 – 362,929
- 2019 – 364,204
It would be safe to assume that his strict laws had dissuaded students from heading to the USA. However, experts are hopeful that with Biden in power, the graphs might change its trend for good.
Best time for MS in the US?
Joe Biden’s victory is historic in its own rights. It marks the end of Trump’s exhausting and manic term in the white house. Many believe that this will bring an end to Trump’s unilateralism and America-first populism.
Biden harbors huge support for international workers and students. This must mean that on coming to power he will look to revert the oppressive bills and laws that affect international students and workers. This provides a golden opportunity for MS aspirants who have long aspired to pursue their MS in the US but held back because of the oppressive Trump regime.
